Money Advice for Exotic Entertainers

Have you ever noticed that whenever you go to work stressed about paying your rent on time, the overdue credit card bill, and the lack of money in your bank account, you tend to do less than great in your earnings at work? Have you noticed that the more you focused on the lack of money, the less money you make? Is it a coincidence? I think not.

Positivity attracts positivity, and negativity attracts negativity.

In other words, when you are on your way to work, or in the dressing room applying your make up, shift your thinking. Visualize the abundance of money in your bank account, visualize all of your bills payed and taken care of, visualize all of your customers sitting at your stages, asking you for dances, for time in the VIP room. Start your night with those thoughts in your head, and then focus on your goal through out the night.

Applying that single principle has made a significant difference in my nightly earnings.

How would you apply the law of attraction to your spending habits?

First, you must understand the difference between having stuff (going shopping) and having money in the savings (free money – accruing interest). The process also starts when you are at work. A lot of dancers, when they are sitting in the dressing room at the end of their shift, counting their money think of what they are going to do with it, or how they are going to spend it. Instead of thinking of how you are going to spent your money, think of how much you are going to save. Adding a new pair of shoes to your collection is not an investment. Putting money in your savings account is. Having money in your savings account pays you interest, in other words it attracts more money.

Money in the bank will give you a peace of mind and a sense of stability in your life. Being an exotic dancer by nature has it’s financial ups and downs, but keeping more of the money that you make tonight, will provide you the stability and peace of mind. Think about the amount of money you can make if you don’t have to worry and stress over your unpaid bills.

Want vs. Need

The difference between wants and needs, seems to be pretty simple, until you go shopping. A new pair of jeans – well, you need more pants, so might as well get those, along with a new shirt; passing by a coffee shop and hear that inner voice – “I need a Latte, I need a Latte… “

After going from store to store, and finding things that you “need” all over the place, you’ve spent far too much money than you should  have. Why is that?

Because you have not made the distinction between a “want” and a “need” – when you have not made the distinction between the two, habitually, you categorize your wants as your needs.

In reality, as humans we only need:

  • shelter
  • food and water
  • basic hygiene and health care
  • clothing

How do you break the habit?

  • Know what you already have.
Have you ever opened your closet, to find it overstuffed, and couldn’t find anything? When was the last time you cleaned it out, got rid of stuff that doesn’t fit anymore? Where you surprised to find items you have been looking for? If you don’t know what you have, you won’t know what it is that you actually need.
  • Appreciate and take care of what you already have.
After you know what you have, take care of it. Wash clothes according to instructions, dry clean what you are suppose to, fix costumes that need to be fixed. You will find that your belongings will last longer, and need to be replaced less often. Appreciate the value of you belongings, and be happy with them.
  • Think about what you buy.
When going to the store, question every single item you want to buy. Ask whether you really need this or just want the item; do you have something similar to what you are trying to buy? Can you be without it? Is it money well spent?
My rule of thumb is, if I have any doubt about a purchase, I don’t buy it.
  • Know where your money goes.
If you don’t know what you do with your money, you don’t know what you can do with it. Try physically tracking your spending – get a little pocket notebook, and every time you make a purchase write it down. Saving the receipts will not work with this one (have you ever tried saving receipts, and found them scattered all over your purse and wallet?). This has a two fold effect – you are more likely to skip that $5 latte, if you have to write it down. Review your spending, and consciously and physically take charge of  your money.

This is the harsh reality majority of women who retire from an exotic dancer career, retire having nothing but memories of that nice car, and a closet full of clothes. Their savings are almost non-existent. Most of these women don’t realize that the amount of money they are making now, will probably be the most they will ever make at one time. So why do exotic entertainers have a hard time paying their bills when the first of the month comes around? Why is it so easy to justify a purchase of a $500 purse, hundreds of dollars worth of make up, shoes, clothes, etc? Just because they can. Because when you see all of the money that you make, it is hard not to spend it. It is easy to say – I worked so hard, I deserve a reward…. I make more money now, so I can spend more…. These are just excuses which justify your wants, not your needs!

There is absolutely no reason for a stripper to be broke.
There is absolutely no reason for a dancer not to save her money. Emergency fund is absolutely crucial in this business, so is saving for your future. You can do both, and still live a very comfortable life style.

I am here to show you that thriving financially is possible in this business, and that you really don’t need those designer clothes or shoes. I am going to show you that it is possible to maintain your stripper look, without braking the bank. I will talk about getting your spending under control, and your saving in high gear, so that when you retire your stripper heals, you will be much better off, than when you started.

So why should you listen to me?
Because I’ve been there. I’ve made an enormous amount of money and spend it just as fast. I also came home crying, because I haven’t made anything. I’ve had the nice car, and fancy apartment, closet full of expensive clothes I never wore. And then I got hurt, and all of the sudden, I couldn’t work. Out of work for two months. Two months worth of bills to pay, and I couldn’t pay.

I learned my lessons the hard way, and I am here to tell you that you don’t have to make the same mistakes.
